Social realism films highlight the many social issues we face in todays society. I feel our film co insides with this genre. Our film is about a young man going through a very hard stage of his life, he is addicted to alcohol and anti-depression. He is failing on all aspects of his life e.g. school. He has a great love for poetry music and tells the story of the ending of his life depending how you read it. he does this through poetry voice over and all round presence and appearance. In terms of other social realism films it was imperative that our film struck the balance between telling a story that felt realistic to which people could relate to and not being boring something also lingering around the social realism genre. Existing media texts such as Brick, Inside, Slip of the tongue, Looking for Eric, Kidulthood and Adulthood. Adulthood helped us to come up with a storyline that felt realistic and that could attract the target audience we were looking to.
Slip of the tongue gave us the inspiration and the idea of being trapped, it also gave us the idea of using poetry to tell a story. Inside also gave us the idea of being trapped within yoursel€f or surroundings, watching films such as Adulthood and Kidulthood highlighted the importance of creating a believable digesis. We set our film in south London and we feel we captured some of the key elements normally associated with films set in south London, such as gritty looking streets. However we felt it was important to stay away from estates and gangs traditional stereotypes of south London as it would have confused our audience.
Our film does not conform to the Todorov theory, which starts with equilibrium, disequilibrium, resolution, restored order and new equilibrium. Instead our film starts with disruption to some extent. There is no happy ending to our film it ends with an ambiguous ending, something also going against the Todorov theory. The reason for this being that life is not always full of happy endings. We wanted to leave our film with the suggestion of death opening up the door/gate for a sequal. Also doing on ending like this gets the evidence involved because it gives them the power to interpret what happened according to there own immagration
